This was part of a window display in Pioneer Square, an area of downtown Seattle, and I immediately fell in love with it. Hooray!

Holy God, that's creepifying!
There's something so surreal going on here. The gesture of the hand and "removal" of the mask both seem very real. And when actual people remove they're masks, they reveal their real self. But below the mask is something obviously unreal - a cracked-paint, ghoulish mannequin thing. Taking off a mask to reveal your unrealness. Just horrifying to me.

God, the composition's cool. The hand is framed in what looks to be an actual frame. Another weird level of symbolic and real intersecting.

I don't find it creepy, I find it beautiful. The mask is so black and imposing, almost anchoring the image into place. It is very serious in the middle of a mischievous scene, in fact allowing it to be mischievous. I can't stop looking at it. It is very good.
